‘Champagne Pink Convertible’ is the intriguing title of the new single from North East 7 piece band the ALEX OPAL OUTFIT. We first came across the group via a track on one of Craig Charles’ ‘Trunk Of Funk’ compilations. That track was the driving Northern soul pastiche, ‘’Telling You Lies’ and ‘Champagne Pink Convertible’ is another retro sound, though far less frantic.
Fronted by the soulful vocal of a lady simply known as Mattie, (pictured below with Alex) this one’s easy on the ear though I have to say the title/chorus hook melody owes more than a little to India.Arie’s ‘Video’!
Band leader Alex describes the inspiration for the song: “My mate was telling me he’d started seeing someone, they both had ‘absolutely nowt’, but despite their financial woes they’d been having an amazing time and had fallen madly in love, this was the first spark of inspiration I had for the song”.
