Don’t know too much about US soul man DARRYL JOHNSON save that his latest record – on which he’s backed by a tight little combo – the DETROIT-MEMPHIS EXPERIENCE – is winning lots of plays on all the best soul stations. Song in question is a Johnny Northern /Clyde Otis composition… ‘Anyone Can Tell (We’re In Love)’ and there’s a lovely throwback flavour about the whole thing. It’s sweet and smooth but not cloying thanks to Darryl’s old school soul vocals and some tremendous sax work.
The song’s full title (which refers to wedding bells) and the art work indicate that Mr J is aiming at the wedding song market…. but this tune deserves a wider hearing. I believe that Darryl works in and around Detroit and treads the wedding, corporate and cruise circuit but with the right kind of support his track could take him to a whole new level. Recommended.
