It’s one of soul’s classic songs…. ‘California Soul’. The Ashford/Simpson tune has been oft recorded – notably by people of the calibre of the Fifth Dimension, Marlena Shaw and plenty of the Motown crew. And now it’s been given a makeover courtesy of CITRUS SUN… that lovely UK soul and jazz and funk band marshalled by guitar man Jim Mullen.
This new gritty and sparse version of ‘California Soul’ is a Citrus Sun collaboration with long time mentor Bluey Maunick and it features a powerful vocal from veteran UK soul man Noel McKoy (pictured below with Bluey), a tough guitar hook and some lovely harmonica from 22 year old Indonesian musician Rega Dauna.
The track is taken from Citrus Sun’s upcoming album ’Expansions And Visions’ which will be released on August 14th by Dome Records.
