BUTCH MILES DIES…

Jazz drummer BUTCH MILES died on Thursday 2nd February. He was 78 and died in Austin, Texas, he had been ill for some time, having had a lung transplant in 2014.

Born Charles J Thornton Jr, Miles will be best remembered for his work with the Count Basie Orchestra (he had two stints with the Basie band) but he also worked with people like Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck. In the 80s and 90s he led his own Jazz Express and in later life he taught at the Texas State University Music School.
