BLUE SKY THINKING

The veteran Memphis tenor saxophonist and flutist CHARLES LLOYD, who is 86 on March 15, shows no sign of slowing down and contemplating retirement. To mark reaching a significant milestone in his life, Blue Note Records is releasing a new Lloyd double album, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, on his birthday.

The album, which is the 51st LP of his long and storied career and eleventh for Blue Note, finds Lloyd joined by three stellar supporting musicians on the project, all masters of contemporary jazz: pianist Jason Moran, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Brian Blade. Together, the quartet creates an irresistible musical synergy that animates the set’s fifteen tracks, among which are six new Lloyd compositions, including the gorgeous flute-led nocturne ‘Beyond Darkness,’ and a haunting ballad ‘The Ghost of Lady Day,’ a highly spiritual homage to the iconic jazz singer Billie Holiday. Another jazz legend, pianist/composer Thelonious Monk, is celebrated by the quirky ‘Monk’s Dance.’

The album, which is preceded by the single “Defiant, Tender Warrior”, is not only a testament to Lloyd’s longevity and staying power but also his undimmed creativity, which continues to blossom in the autumn of his life.

The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow is released on March 15, 2024.  It will be available in the following formats: exclusive color vinyl, black vinyl, CD, and digital download.
