A few years back Detroit’s LAURA RAIN AND THE CAESARS embarked on what they called their “Soul Journey”. To that end they released a series of connected singles that, when taken together, made a coherent whole. Then came the band’s acclaimed ‘Rise Again’ LP which they’re now following with another soulful journey via a series of singles to be released at regular intervals. This time around they’re calling their odyssey “Music Is Love”.
We enjoyed the first single a few weeks back – a slow, relentless burner, Feels so Right’ which had its roots in 80s and 90s soul.
Laura and George Friend – her husband and musical partner (essentially the band!) now follow that with another striking single, ‘Angels Fall From Heaven’. This one has its musical roots even further back – think 60s and 70s and it has an odd, ethereal sound – but a sound that will grow on you. . Laura sings in a variety of quasi operatic voices, creating an otherworldly presence within a dreamlike state of wonder. She begs a question from above, “is this just a dream or am I in love?” Interesting and good to go now via all the usual streaming/download portals.
