One of this year’s revelations has been the emergence of US West Coast band, THE SEXTONES – (childhood friends, Mark Sexton (guitar, vocals), Alexander Korostinsky (bass), Daniel Weiss (drums), and Christopher Sexton (piano))
They’ve charmed us with a series of retro soul singles – a faithful cover of Jean Plum’s gorgeous 1975 Hi outing ‘Here I Go Again’, their take Papa Bear and his Cubs’ ‘You’re So Fine’ and then a faithful rendition of the Intruders’ mighty ‘Cowboys To Girls’.
The great news is that there’s a whole Sextones album on the way. It’s ‘Love Can’t Be Borrowed’ and Kelly Finnigan of the Monophonics is in the producer’s chair. However, it won’t be out till September! But in the meantime, the band are releasing the set’s first single – a gorgeous ‘Better Late Than Never’ which follows the same retro soul template at the first three singles.
This ‘Better Late Than Never’ is the sweetest of sweet soul – echoes of the Delfonics with the Sextones’ soulful vocals supported by a honeyed femme chorus and sweeping, Philly style strings. It comes with a big SJF recommendation!
THE SEXTONES: Better Late Than Never’ released April 14th. The album, ’Love Can’t Be Borrowed’ released September 29th. The label is Record Kicks.
