One time super session singer and backing singer to the stars, DENIECE WILLIAMS made her solo breakthrough with her amazing 1976 album, ‘This Is Niecy’. Produced by Charles Stepney and Maurice White it showed off her remarkable muti-octave voice and spawned two worldwide hits – ‘Free’ and ‘That’s What Friends Are For’. Another of the album tracks, the sell-penned ‘Cause You Love Me, Baby’ won plenty of DJ support back in the day and it still gets a few spins all these years later – it’s a sweet tune and a great showcase for Ms W’s vocal gymnastics!
Now, almost out of the blue, the song’s back with us in two new mixes – “Soul” and “Afro House”. Those tags say it all really. The “Soul” tweak brings the cut right up to date with the mixers (Hustlers Social Club, I believe) giving it a happy, clappy, beaty, Drizabone sort of feel… lovely. The “Afro House” retread (clocking in at over 6 minutes) cranks up the tempo and is a potential floor filler in the better dance emporia.
