It’s a while since we’ve had any new music from the iconic AL GREEN. We think the Rev’s last new offering was his 2023 cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day; thus we’re delighted to announce that Al has just released a new single and again, oddly maybe, it’s a cover of a rock anthem – REM’s 1993 outing ‘Everybody Hurts’.
Al explains why he choose the song: : “I could really feel the heaviness of the song, and I wanted to inject a little touch of hope and light into it. There’s always a presence of light that can break through those times of darkness.”
Al takes the song right down into Southern Soulsville. He’s accompanied by some of his old Hi studio mates and a classic femme chorus. However, it’s his tortured vocal that carries the day. Now 78, Al’s voice is flecked with a world weary patina which adds a whole new meaning to the song.
