ADULT CONTEMPORARY MUSIC…

Don’t you just love music definitions and genre classification? How are you with ‘Adult Contemporary’? Well, be prepared to reassess your views on that particular genre as Scottish soul man JOSEPH MALIK launches a new single  simply called ‘Adult Contemporary’.

You’ll probably know that Mr M has been on the UK soul and funk scene for quite a while. Indeed he debuted way back in 1994 and he’s been going strong ever since. En route, he’s worked with people like Gil Scott Heron, Rueben Wilson, The Blackbyrds and the Last Poets and his  music’s been championed by people like Craig Charles and Gilles Peterson , so when our Joe makes music it’s always worth investigating!

Right now he’s preparing a new LP, ‘Proxima Ebony’, and the first single, the aforementioned ‘Adult Contemporary’ is now amongst us. The tune’s a big 70s’, disco romp but with a tough edge. The obvious reference points are  70s disco icon Sylvester and producers Patrick Adams and Larry Levan. Indeed the lyric deals with a major issue from those golden, disco days. The song remembers those who passed or were affected during the AIDS epidemic in the early 80s.

‘Adult Contemporary’ is out now via F*CLR Records but ‘Adult Contemporary’ it ain’t!
