A WALK IN THE BLACK FOREST…

THE HAMBURG SPINNERS (not to be confused with those from Detroit or Liverpool!) are a German instrumental combo – of course, the clue’s in that name! Last time we checked ‘em out, their line-up was Carsten ‘Erobique’ Meyer (Hammond B3), Dennis Rux (guitar), David Nesselhauf (bass) and Lucas Kochbeck (drums) and we believe that at one time they went out as “Carsten M. & The HGs”!, so you can see where they’re coming from.

These Spinners have just released their  third album ‘Im Schwarzwald’ which were reliably informed means “in the Black Forest” and it delivers a decidedly Teutonic take on mod jazz, funk, Southern soul à la Stax and lots besides.

The nearest the band get to emulating the Booker T and the MGs sound is on ‘Huschdegudsl’ and ‘Kunstkoepfe’ (sorry we don’t have a translation!). On both there are strong Hammond lines duelling with biting Cropper-esque guitar riffs and booming Al Jackson beats.

Elsewhere the music’s quirky and cinematic  and if that intrigues you you’ll need to know that you can take your walk in the Hamburg Spinners’ Black Forest right now courtesy of Légère Recordings
