Frank Sinatra’s ‘Songs For Swinging Lovers’ was one of the iconic albums of the 20th century. Often cited as one of the first “concept” albums it was and remains a classic. Now jazz singer, LAURA ZAKIAN has updated the Sinatra concept with her upcoming release – ‘Songs For Modern Lovers’.
The 13 tracker, which Laura describes as her own romantic mixtape, combines some of the songs from the Sinatra album with an eclectic selection of modern love songs. Those “newbies” include Elvis Costello’s ‘Baby Plays Around’, Paul Weller’s ‘You Do Something To Me’ and even Chicago’s ‘If You Leave Me Now’ which Laura regards as the “iconic school disco snogging tune”.
The Sinatra standards include ‘Our Love Is Here To Stay’, ‘I Thought About You’ and ‘You Make Me Feel So Young’ – Laura’s mother’s favourite… and therefore redolent with memories for the singer.
Laura will be launching the album with a special performance at Soho’s Piazza Express on Monday 27th January, 2014.
