A TOUCH OF VELVET….

nadine

Here at SoulandJazzandFunk we’ve featured soul and jazz and funk from all over the world, but never, I think, from Malta! So, let’s put things right by focusing on NADINE AXISA – a jazz vocalist from that lovely island. Nadine’s just released her debut album. It’s called ‘Velvet’ – an apt title for a beguiling lounge jazz 12 tracker that also features the cream of Malta’s jazz players.

The LP’s title cut is one of the many highlights. It’s a frothy Latin shuffle that inspires a real summery optimism – all assisted by some great piano from Dominic Galea and a lovely trumpet courtesy of Adrian Brincat. It’s the album’s opening cut and sets the tone perfectly for what’s to come… easily accessible cuts like the lovely ballad ‘Stormy Night’ and the swinging ‘Tempted’.

The most complex tune is ‘Sanaa’ – a collaboration with bassist Roberto Badoglio who provides the simplest of accompaniments to Nadine’s pure vocal. There’s a much bigger sound on the album closer, ‘Free’. Here, a big brass section creates a great groove that Nadine rides elegantly.

Though Ms. Axisa is clearly her own woman in her style and sound you’ll hear shades of Monica Mancini, Clare Teal… even Astrud Gilberto. Her music is available on i-tunes and other leading download portals. Find out more @ www.nadineaxisa.com
