SOUL QUEST RECORDS is a small but perfectly formed London-based indie label. It’s fronted by real enthusiasts Max Sinàl and Slxm Sol. The former is something of a vet – starting off in pirate radio 25 years ago! In recent years he has had releases on labels such as Knee Deep In Sound, Of Unsound Mind, Elements and Black Butter under various alias’s including 2fox, M.A.X and Sinàl (Kincaid & Sinàl) As one half of 2fox, they have amassed over 20 million Spotify streams. Yes quite a CV!
As a Soul Quest taster and in response to demand, the label has just released a 5 track EP , imaginatively titled ‘Quest One’. Nor surprisingly, the mini album features three tracks from Max. They are the dreamy ‘Let You In’ (tagged as one of Bandcamp’s best releases of 2023), the gentle shuffle that is ‘Let Your Hair Down’ (which was synced with the smash hit video game Fortnite) and the neo soul/ laid back jazz sound of ‘Waiting’ (with vocals from Bianca Nieddu). Then there’s King Crowney X Zoe Kypri‘s ‘Coat On’ – a fresh take on the London underground, contemporary soul sound (here in a new Slxm Sol mix). Rounding off the package is 2fox’s (aka Max Sinàl & Renell Shaw), broken beat ‘So Long’, with Liam Bailey & BB James on vocals.
Expect nothing old hat or retro here. The 5 tracker represents some of the best of the contemporary London soul and jazz underground. Little wonder tracks are already being cherry picked and played out by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier and Danny Krivit
