Held on the grounds of Glynde Place located in the South Downs of rural East Sussex, the Love Supreme Festival, which began in 2013, has the distinction of being the largest outdoor jazz festival in Europe. Due to the pandemic, it fell off the jazz calendar for two years but with life seeming to be returning to normal, the popular three-day event which attracts some of the biggest names in funk, soul and R&B as well as jazz, is coming back this summer.
This year’s festival will run from 1st to the 3rd of July and looks set to be bigger than ever, offering a smorgasbord of musical delights. Among this year’s headliners is the ‘jazz cat in a hat’ Gregory Porter, who’s just been added to the lineup alongside the neo-soul pioneer Erykah Badu – in an exclusive UK performance – southern soul queen Candi Staton, disco divas Sister Sledge and the UK singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas. Jazz legends Charles Lloyd and his group The Marvels will be appearing as well as another noted American saxophonist, Gary Bartz, who will a guest of the British group Maisha.
New additions to the previously announced line-up are the soulful US jazz singer Lady Blackbird, the British Nigerian singer/songwriter Sam Henshaw; the duo Mr Jukes & Barney Artist (a special collaboration between Jack Steadman of Bombay Bicycle Club and London hip-hop MC Barney Artist); rising Blue Note saxophonist Melissa Aldana; and the Grammy-winning British-born/New Orleans-based troubadour Jon Cleary.
