Have you been approached with the idea of scoring a film? Is this a project that you would feel comfortable with?
I have not been asked to score a film, although I have provided music for a few projects, including a comedy DVD for Katt Williams: ‘Katt Williams Live.’ It was ‘Uncertainty’ from my first album, ‘Red Vinyl,’ and served as the music for the opening montage for the DVD. It was a very exciting project for me. I hear the DVD sold really well so it was nice to get my music out to a lot of unsuspecting litterers. I also provided music for ‘Wheel of Fortune: New Orleans’ back in 2011. They created an animated saxophone in which I recorded a sax lick to sync with it. It was an extremely fun project to work on and awesome getting to watch it on TV!
In what directions is jazz moving towards? What genres of jazz are popular nowadays?
This is always a tricky question. I’m not sure where jazz is headed. I think that it is useless to speculate on where an art form is headed because I believe that like an earthquake, it is impossible to predict. I like living in the moment of what I’m playing or working on. If I keep looking ahead or trying to predict where things are going it prevents me from enjoying the art I am creating at the current moment. I suppose it’s something I don’t think about, if that makes any sense at all.
What are your future plans?
My future plans for my jazz career are to make another record and continue to make records throughout the rest of my life. I’d like to create and give as much as I can as an artist and see how I grow as a writer/performer. I’m writing music for a new original record in 2013, but like my previous records, I like to take my time and make something musical and meaningful.
