EVERETTE BACK TO HIS FIRST LOVE

EVERETTE BACK TO HIS FIRST LOVE

After many years at the top of smooth jazz tree, in-demand sax player EVERETTE HARP has returned to what he calls his 'Fist Love'… "proper jazz". In the sleeve notes HARP writes about getting back to the music he grew up with - stuff like JOHN COLTRANE'S 'Soul Trane' and DAVE BRUBECK'S 'Time Out'. So he and producer GEORGE DUKE assembled a top band (including DWIGHT SILLS, LENNY CASTRO MICHAEL PATCHES STEWART and REGGIE YOUNG) and set to work. The result is the acclaimed 10 tracker, 'First Love' whose highlights include covers of COLTRANE'S 'Central Park West', the GERSHWIN'S 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' and a DUKE/HARP collaboration, 'TEXAS GROVE' - which has a real feel of classic CRUSADERS about it. EVERETTE HARP'S 'First Love' is out now on Shanachie Records.

JAZZ INSIGHTS ...

JAZZ INSIGHTS ...

Chicago's redoubtable Dusty Groove Records kick off their 2010 campaign with the release of an album that's a must for jazz collectors. 'Insight' by the PRINCE LASHA ENSEMBLE was recorded back in 1966 in England, where LASHA - the Texan-born sax man - was then living. The six tracker features an unusual line up - including two pianos (the incomparable STAN TRACEY and MIKE CARR) and a harp (DAVID SNELL), giving the music an exotic flavour - enhanced by LASHA himself doubling on wooden flute and plastic alto sax. The original album was only ever given limited UK release… now on CD for the first time, the album is available worldwide via www.dustygroove.com

KYLIE ... ALL IN THE MIX

KYLIE ... ALL IN THE MIX

One of last year's most intriguing soul sets was KYLIE AULDIST'S 'Made Of Stone'. Now two of that LP's best cuts have been given the remix treatment. The lovely 'In A Week In A Day' gets two beguiling tweaks - with ASHLEY BEEDLE'S STREETSOUL EDIT just shading it over the PTH PROJECTS AMNESIA MIX. There are two new looks at 'One Goodbye' too and both the FLEVANS REMIX and the HINT MIX are big and ultra percussive. The mixes can be found on a special 12" from Tru Thoughts, though both the ASHLEY BEEDLE and FLEVANS reworkings are also on a new Tru Thoughts compilation - 'Shapes 10 -01' which will be commercially available from April.

WIN A MARVIN GAYE ALBUM

WIN A MARVIN GAYE ALBUM

In soul's long and glorious history many artists have laid claim to be "LOVE MAN No. 1" … well, here at www.soulandjazzandfunk.com we don't think that too many would argue with our contention that it's MARVIN GAYE who most deserves the accolade. By coincidence - and with Valentines Day just around the corner - Universal Records have just released a double CD to prove our point. 'The Greatest Love Songs Of MARVIN GAYE' boasts 40 songs which prove that when it came to romancing MR G had few peers…. All the man's greatest romantic moments are here - including 'Let's Get It On', 'How Sweet It Is' and 'Sexual Healing' along with all those famous knee-trembling duets he crafted with the ladies of Motown… and sure, things like 'What's Going On' and 'Mercy Mercy Me' aren't romantic per se…but they do create a very special mood. Be that as it may, the very nice people at Universal have given us three of the CDs to offer as prizes in a special Valentines Competition…. Simply answer the question below and e-mail the answer (with you name and full address) to us (the link's up there, top right) and the first three correct answers drawn out of the now redundant bobble hat on February 14th will win a copy of the CD…

Good luck…. Here's that all important question

Which of the Motown ladies duetted with MARVIN on his classic smoocher 'If This Word Were Mine'?
